Abstract

Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, and infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been identified as the causal agent for this condition. The natural history of cervical cancer is characterized by slow disease progression, rendering the condition, in essence, preventable and even treatable when diagnosed in early stages. Pap smear and the recently introduced prophylactic vaccines are the most prominent prevention options, but despite the availability of these primary and secondary screening tools, the global burden of disease is unfortunately still very high. This book will focus on epidemiological and fundamental research aspects in the area of HPV, and it will update those working in this fast-progressing field with the latest information.

Abstract

A ubiquitous organism able to infect all mammals and birds, which has been estimated to infect one third of the global human population, Toxoplasma gondii is the most successful parasite on Earth, and toxoplasmosis a major zoonotic disease. A current approach to this zoonosis is the "one health" concept, based on the understanding that a disease occurring between animals and man in a specific environment can only be dealt with at the interface of all "players" involved. This book, composed of a series of articles which integrate human and animal data on toxoplasmosis, by authors from all over the world, offers its readers a view on the current research interests and achievements.

Abstract

The International Society for Economics and Social Sciences of Animal Health (ISESSAH) research has organized Research Topics as proceedings of the 2nd ISESSAH conference (https://www.alphavisa.com/isessah-innovsur/2018/) that was held on 14th and 15th of May 2018 in Montpellier, France. The conference explored the field of economics and social sciences of animal health and aims to improve animal health and welfare policies, programs and projects through more nuanced use of concepts and tools available in economics and social science disciplines. The proceedings provided a forum for all conference registrants to contribute scientific articles and posters in this growing field. This is a continuation of the Inaugural ISESSAH conference proceedings.

Abstract

A major objective of this open access book is to summarize the current status of Buruli Ulcer (BU) research for the first time. It will identify gaps in our knowledge, stimulate research and support control of the disease by providing insight into approaches for surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment of Buruli Ulcer. Book chapters will cover the history, epidemiology diagnosis, treatment and disease burden of BU and provide insight into the microbiology, genomics, transmission and virulence of Mycobacterium ulcerans.

Abstract

Of all the parasitic diseases, leishmaniasis is one of the most diverse, with a variety of manifestations, from relatively minor cutaneous lesions to deadly visceral infections. It is also widespread, causing human disease in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa. The environments in which this disease occurs range from desert to tropical jungle to urban habitats. Not surprisingly, the literature on this disease is written in a variety of languages including Portuguese, Arabic, English and French among others. This book provides a synopsis in English of much of the recent research on leishmaniasis, with a focus on the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of the disease as described by researchers around the world, but with a focus on the research from Brazil and the Middle East.

Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 3-5 million cases of severe influenza worldwide will result in 250,000-500,000 deaths annually. Collectively, data are shared via the WHO's Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), which includes 143 institutions in 113 WHO member states, to help alert the emergence of antigenic variants or the beginning of a pandemic. In April 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cited the first incidence of human-to-human transmission of pandemic H1N1, also referred to as swine influenza A, which was antigenically distinct from other circulating human H1N1. As the first influenza pandemic of the twenty-first century, pandemic H1N1 was not included in the annual trivalent vaccine regimen, leaving a large majority of the population unprotected from the newly emerging pathogen.

Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii was first identified more than 100 years ago in the tissues of birds and mammals. Although toxoplasmosis is important all over the world, its approaches to diagnostic strategies considerably differ among countries. Its wide distribution may be attributed to complex transmission patterns and parasite coevolution with multiple hosts. Although T. gondii infections of immunocompetent people are generally considered asymptomatic, infections in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with AIDS or organ transplant recipients, can result in severe consequences. This book, composed of a series of articles, including effective diagnosis of laboratory in toxoplasma infections, congenital toxoplasmosis, relationship between toxoplasmosis and public health genomics, prevalence, genetic diversity of toxoplasmosis, and microparticle vaccines against Toxoplasma gondii by authors from all over the world, presents a wide open point of view for toxoplasmosis.
